One thing we have learned about California is that there are mountains everywhere. There are mountains all along the coast, there are mountains in the north, there are mountains to the east, and there are mountains to the south. While driving from Bakersfield to El Segundo, we had to go over "the Grapevine" which crosses the Tehachapi Mountains.
We passed by Pyramid Lake on the west.
Because the landscape is so dry, it is easy to see why California has so much trouble with wildfires. Even though there was very little that was green, the mountains were beautiful in their own unique way.
We saw this gun training facility off to the right with the buildings
At some point (and we didn't notice when it occurred), the northbound and southbound lanes of I-5 swapped sides. Normally, we would be seeing the northbound traffic on the driver side, but the northbound traffic was down in the canyon on the passenger side.
We passed by what looked like some police or army gun training field...
...but found out later it was a big paintball park called "Warped Ops Airsoft Field."
As we started getting closer to Los Angeles, the traffic started getting heavier (and this is Sunday).
Between Chuck's very good driving and my watching the signs, the GPS, and Google maps, we made it to Dockweiler RV Park in El Segundo without any missed turns!
We pulled into our site #2, got set up, and then went to the Robinsons where we spent a few hours visiting and were treated to a very nice dinner out on their deck overlooking El Segundo.
