On to BIG BEND

With a long day of driving ahead of us, we were on the road by 7:00 am this morning.  Even at that hour, the traffic was starting to get busy so we were glad when the roads became more like this:

The Texas Hill country which we were traveling through is so beautiful.  Everything is so much greener than we expected.  When we traveled through here in November of 2013, everything was more brown and we thought it was always more desert-looking.  But the greenness and the flowers make Texas really beautiful in the spring.

And of course, when you're traveling through Texas, you're going to see an oil well here and there.

About 10 miles after filling up with fuel in Fort Stockton, we finally turned south off of I-10 onto Hwy 67.  We thought I-10 was desolate but Hwy 67 was even more desolate.

The wildflowers growing everywhere now were gorgeous!

Just after we turned on to Hwy 118 south, we got held up by a train that stopped on the tracks in front of us for about 15-20 minutes.  Ken even called the police department to see if there was a problem because the train was just sitting there.  The dispatcher welcomed him to the town of Alpine where the trains always stop on the tracks here to change engineers or add cars.

Once the train was gone, we headed on down Hwy 118 toward Big Bend.  There were a few more mountains in the distance here...

...and the road was more curvy and hilly.

We arrived at Big Bend Resort & Adventures in Terlingua, Texas, around 4 pm.  While we were setting up, a lady who lives in the campground warned us to be careful and watch where we are walking because she had seen a couple of rattlesnakes.  Yikes!  After getting all set up, we sat under one of the few trees in the campground, relaxed and enjoyed the scenery for a few minutes.

After dinner, we played SkipBo, Sequence Dice and Pinochle.  While the girls won all the games last night, the guys won them all tonight.

Except for the water heater door on our RV coming open going down the road today (which Ken & Bonnie thankfully saw and told us so we could stop and close it) and the long stop for the train, we had an beautifully uneventful day today.

We're looking forward to going to Big Bend National Park tomorrow.
