While Crystal, Grant and Avery drove into Portland to meet a
friend for lunch on Monday, Chuck and I drove to Mt. Hood for a short day trip.
We drove up to the Timberline Lodge and Ski Resort which is
as far up the mountain as you can go in a car.
Inside the lodge, we watched a short documentary film on the
construction of Timberline Lodge. It was
built during the Depression between 1936 and 1938 as a part of Works Progress Administration and gave many
unemployed construction workers and artisans jobs. Much of the work of the artisans is still in
use and on display today as seen in the metalwork,
the woodwork,
and the mosaics and painted woodcarvings.
In the center of the lodge, is a huge stone fireplace going
up to the ceiling.
The two wings of the lodge were constructed first with the
center of the lodge being constructed last.
This is the front of the lodge...
and this is the rear of the lodge.
And of course, the views from the lodge were spectacular
both from the front...
...and from the back.
The below pictures are a reflection of Mt. Hood off of the
big picture windows at the rear center section of the lodge.
We could even see the skiers up on the mountainside. (Yes, they were skiing in August!)
Mt. Hood is one of the few places in North America that has
year-round skiing.
Later that evening, back at the camper, we celebrated
Grant's birthday.
Grant got all those candles blown out before the smoke alarm
went off. :)
