…before heading east and turning inland. Here the land is more barren…
…until you get closer to the east side which is more hilly.
You still see ponds (lakes) everywhere. Chuck said that there is no way a man could
fish every lake in Canada even if he started on the day he was born and fished
every day of his life. I don’t know if
that could even be accomplished in Newfoundland based on all the ponds we saw.
As we got closer to St. Anthony and the eastern side of the
northernmost peninsula of Newfoundland….
we were welcomed to Vinland.
We passed our first moose road kill….
…a few miles before we arrived at Triple Falls RV Park. At the campground, we had a lot of campsites
to pick from. After getting set up, we
decided to drive on into St. Anthony. As
soon as we turned out of the campground, we drove past the “triple falls” the
park was names after.
St. Anthony was the biggest town we had been in since
arriving in Newfoundland. They even had
a real grocery store: Foodtown. We drove out to Fishing Point which had a
light house and was as far as you could go on the road in St. Anthony. As we turned the curve, we saw our first
iceberg in the bay.
And after we reached the point, we saw another whale. (Sorry, just got the spout this time.)
We thought, “Well, we’ve just seen with this drive what we
drove all the way to St. Anthony for:
whales and icebergs.”
On the way back home, we noticed this roadside garden.
Along with the firewood on the sides of the roads, you will
see these gardens along the sides of the roads.
We later learned that a lot of Newfies will use this land along the
roadside to plant a vegetable garden.
Everyone knows whose garden is whose and nobody bothers or steals from
the other person’s garden (except for an occasional moose or deer or rabbit).
We had originally planned to go on a whale and iceberg tour
on a boat on Monday morning but it was calling for rain. I called the boat tour and they had openings
for the 4:00 pm tour so we got our camera and binoculars back at the motorhome
and headed back to St. Anthony to see some more whales and ‘bergs. (See separate post: “Whales and Bergs.”)
On Monday, it rained as predicted so I ended up getting
caught up on some work. There was very
poor wi-fi at the campground so we drove into town to the library. While we were in the library, Chuck got to
talking with the regional library manager and found out that his brother had
worked at the Upper Room in Nashville.
We found out later that mama had actually worked with his brother. Small world!
