Tombstone Revisited

When Chuck and I were in Arizona 2 years ago, we did a day trip to Tombstone and thoroughly enjoyed it.   Ken and Bonnie wanted to see Tombstone too and we wanted to see it again so on Wednesday, we did a day trip to Tombstone.

After parking the car, we stopped in a store that sold antiques, clothes and souvenirs.  We saw this beautiful purple glass on display.

The saleslady told us this glass was made prior to World War II and the reason it was purple was because of the manganese contained in it.  The more manganese there was in the glass, the more purple the glass was.  We realized then that this is what the purple glass pieces were that we saw at the ghost town of Lake Valley.

We walked down the wooden sidewalks of Tombstone stopping in some of the stores and looking around.  We decided to go to the O.K. Corral to see the reenactment of the gunfight between the Clantons and the Earps again.  They had some rope and a couple of fake steers for people to try their hand at roping.  Ken gave it a try...

...and looped the rope around the steer's head on the first try!

Chuck gave it a try also...

...and after several tries almost roped himself!  :)

We watched the gunfight reenactment which was pretty good.  As instructed by Doc Holliday, we cheered the good guys (the Earps) and booed the bad guys (the Clantons).

It was all in good fun but I think the people that liked the show the most were the five little cowboys who ran up to have their picture taken with the Earps.

After the show, we were all pretty hungry.  We walked around town trying to decide where to go.  We walked into the Crystal Palace where Chuck and I had eaten last time.  The Earps and the Clantons were sitting there at the bar eating their lunch and looking at their smartphones.  :)

Bonnie checked with one of the clerks in a nearby store for restaurant recommendations and we decided to try Big Nose Kate's Saloon.  It was the most crowded restaurant in town so we figured that was a good sign.  Ken and Bonnie had brisket sandwiches, Chuck had a panini and I had a wrap and they were all very good.  There was also live music so that made our lunch even better!

In the center of the restaurant, was a spiral staircase that went downstairs to the basement which is where the bar used to be located.  Now there was a gift shop downstairs.

We walked downstairs to check out the gift shop and to also find where the Swamper lived.  The Swamper was a janitor who worked for the hotel that was formerly here.  He lived down in the basement and dug his way to some of the underground mines where he was believed to have maybe found some silver treasure of his own.

After lunch, we walked down to the Bird Cage Theatre.  Chuck and Ken strolled down the middle of the street like they were ready for a gunfight!  They look really scary, don't they!  :)

After we left downtown Tombstone, we stopped by Boot Hill.

Boot Hill is Tombstone's town cemetary and final resting place of the Clanton brothers who died in that infamous fight at the O.K. Corral.

I forgot to mention at the beginning of the post that we saw Kim, Brenna and Gracie, our lady skater friends on our way to Tombstone and waved at them from the across the interstate.  We had hoped to see them again on the way back but they had turned off on a side road and we missed them.  Bonnie had emailed them and they did say they saw us waving at them.

We also went by this huge airplane cemetery where there seemed to be acres and acres of retired aircraft of all kinds.

When we got back to LazyDays, Ken and Bonnie's front cabinet had also been fixed so I think our stop at Tucson has been very successful!

On Thursday, we both had lots of things to do.  Chuck and I rode back out to Saguaro National Park to return shirts that Chuck and Ken had bought because something in the way they were cut made them not fit right.  And after that, we had big shopping trips to Wal-Mart and Costco that filled our cupboards and refrigerators to the brim.  The beauty shops were opened at both campers with Bonnie cutting Ken's hair, me cutting Chuck's hair and Chuck coloring my hair.  The "day off" also gave Bonnie and I both a chance to get caught up on our blogs.  Phew!  I'm tired!

But we still got together for our nightly game of cards that is ALWAYS so much fun.  The guys won both SkipBo and 5 Crowns tonight and pretty handily I'm sorry to say.  But hey, congratulations anyways guys!  Rrrrrrr!

Tomorrow morning, we leave Tucson and drive to Cottonwood, Arizona, where we will spend some time exploring the Sedona area.  Chuck and I have never been there but Bonnie and Ken have and they said they loved it.  We are looking forward to loving it too!  :)
