San Francisco Part II: Sausalito & Golden Gate

After we left Muir Woods, we drove a short distance to Sausalito where we had our first good view of the San Francisco skyline.

Chuck and I have fond memories of having both breakfast and dinner in Sausalito.  We looked for where the restaurants may have been but didn't find anything we recognized.  We ended up having a delicious lunch at Sausalito Deli & Bakery.  After lunch, we did a little more looking around and Bonnie found a great deal on a fleece jacket and hat.

After we left Sausalito...

...we drove up the mountains on the west side of Hwy 101 to see the Golden Gate Bridge.

The Golden Gate Bridge is one of the world's greatest construction achievements.  It was built during the Depression, between 1933 and 1937, and was opened to vehicles in May of 1937 both ahead of schedule and under budget!  The towers are 746 feet tall,

the main span (between the towers) is 4,200 feet long,

and each cable is 36 1/2 inches in diameter.

On a partly cloudy day like today, the towers will sometimes begin to disappear into the clouds.

We drove back down the mountain and drove across the Golden Gate Bridge to San Francisco.  Watch this!  (Hint:  Turn down the volume.  The wind noise is fairly loud.)

If it wasn't so cool and windy, I think all of us would have enjoyed standing up their looking at the amazing views for a little longer; but we still had a lot left to see this afternoon in San Francisco.
