San Francisco Part III: Exploring San Francisco

Our first stop in San Francisco was one of the curviest streets in the world, Lombard Street; but first we had to find it.

Google Maps led us up and down several streets.

And I do mean UP and DOWN.  We sure wouldn't want to drive a motorhome up and down these streets!

We saw one of those famous San Francisco cable cars for the first time today.

And then we finally reached Lombard Street, the curviest street in San Francisco.  We were surprised we actually got to drive down it today.

When we reached the bottom, Chuck found a place to park the car so Ken and I could run back and take a picture of what we had just driven down.

And then we drove down...

...and up some more...

...to Coit Tower on Telegraph Hill.

From there, we were able to get some terrific views of the city.

Bay Bridge to Oakland

Transamerica Tower
As we were getting ready to leave, Bonnie pointed out to us that we could even see Lombard Street from here.

After we left Telegraph Hill, we drove down to Fisherman's Wharf.

We walked by all the curbside fish markets...

...and by Alioto's, the place I remember having dinner in San Francisco with my mom and dad on our first summer camping vacation out west.

From the back of the pier, we could see Alcatrez.

We walked around Fisherman's Wharf for about an hour and then decided we better began heading back home.  We REALLY got to experience San Francisco first hand and its very busy and slow-moving traffic.  I got a cool picture of the skyscrapers out the sunroof while we were stuck in traffic.

San Francisco has a lot of new building going on too.

When we finally got on the Bay Bridge, the traffic started to move a little better.

We got our last views of San Francisco...

...and Chuck did a superb job negotiating the rush hour traffic going home.  We saw this very cool sign cut into the grass on the hillside across I-580.  (Double-click to enlarge it and see the great message!)

As we reached I-5, the setting sun was making the golden hills of California glisten.

By the time we got back to the campground, we were all pretty hungry and decided to try the Mexican restaurant across the street.  After a delicious dinner and a very fun and full day of exploring San Francisco with Ken and Bonnie, we decided to call it a night.  Another great day!!
