On Sunday, we took a day trip to Springfield to go to
Lincoln's home and the Lincoln Presidential Museum.
Springfield is the capital of Illinois.
Lincoln's Home is a National Historic Site operated by the
National Park Service. We watched a
couple of movies about his life in Springfield.
Lincoln began his law practice in Springfield and it was here that he
married Mary Lincoln and was his last home before moving to Washington, DC when
he became President.
We were surprised at how nice and how big his home was.
The house is around 3,000 square feet and has about 60% to 70% of its
original furnishings.
The historic site not only contained Lincoln's home but also
several of the homes on the street which gave you a good idea of what Lincoln's
neighborhood looked like back then.
This log cabin wagon was paraded through the town when
Lincoln was running for President.
Next, we went to the Lincoln Presidential Museum. We had our picture made with Mr. Lincoln and
his family.
No pictures were allowed anywhere else in the museum but the
movies, information and exhibits were very interesting and was well worth the
visit.
