A stinky job but someone’s got to do it!

Well, it’s that time of year when Chuck has to clean out the macerator.  For those of you who don’t know what a macerator is, a macerator is a motor with a blade and a pump that is hooked up to your wastewater system.  When it works, it is great because it chops up (macerates) the stinky stuff and pumps out to the sewer drain.  Unfortunately, the blades have to be inspected and cleaned out occasionally.  :(
When Chuck started taking the macerator apart, one of the screws stripped out.  When we looked down the hole at the blades, we could tell they were covered up with washing machine lint.  Since installing the Splendide washer/dryer we were concerned that one of these days the macerator would get stopped up with lint or hair and quit working in the middle of dumping the black water.  To get an idea of how bad this could be, watch the movie RV when Robin Williams is attempting to dump his wastewater tanks.  This is something we definitely wanted to avoid so we decided to replace the wastewater drainage system.

We decided to go with the RhinoFlex system which could be purchased at Camping World and for which replacement parts would be fairly easy to find at any Camping World or RV supply store.  Because we wanted to start with a nice clean black water tank, Chuck has me flush the commode continuously:

while he waited and watched the clear connector in the line until it flushed clear of the stinky stuff in the black water tank.

After hooking it up, it drained a lot faster because the wastewater was now going through a 3 inch line rather than being macerated and pumped out of 1 inch line.  The worst problem was that at our site, the sewer connection was nearly 2 feet high.

Because this wastewater system gravity flows, Chuck had to keep picking up the line after dumping to get the rest of the wastewater drained.  Neither water nor the stinky stuff flows up hill.

Overall, I think we will be satisfied with the RhinoFlex because Chuck can drain the wastewater so much faster now.
