After breakfast Saturday morning, we sat outside and enjoyed a cup of coffee by the lake. Nice.....
While we were sitting there, Chuck took this picture of an osprey sitting in a nearby tree.
Later that morning, we drove to Jockey Ridge State Park in Kitty Hawk for the Rogallo Kite Festival. We could see the kites being flown from the top of the sand dunes as we were driving there.
Jockey Ridge State Park is almost next door to the Wright Brothers Memorial and is the location of the tallest sand dunes on the east coast. A lot of people who fly in hang gliders come here (like the Wright Brothers did over 100 years ago). Sounds like the perfect place for a kite festival. :)
There were ALL kinds of kites there.
This was a cool looking kite.
There were several animal kites like a dragon kite,
a panda,
and these octopus and fish kites.
There was even a cow trailing along at the back of this big kite.
We watched this one gentleman named Bob flying a quad-string kite. He made it look so easy. Bob has been flying kites for about 15 years and makes his own kites.
While Chuck was talking with Bob about his kite,
I just sat in my beach chair,
listened to the music provided by the Kitty Hawk Kite Company, and enjoyed watching all the beautiful kites. Below are a couple of videos of the panda and dragon kite for you to enjoy.
They even had dancing cow kites. The dancing cows were kept inflated by the wind and were anchored to the ground by the kite strings.
The wind kept them moving and dancing to the music. So cute! :)
We would have liked to have stayed longer but I forgot the sunscreen and we were both getting hungry for lunch. Before heading back down the dune, we walked over to the panda kite so Chuck could take my picture with the panda...
...and I could get a "selfie" with Mr. Panda. :)
As we headed back down the dune, Chuck stopped and talked to a girl and her father who were also flying quad string kites. She even let Chuck try flying the kite.
It was a lot harder than it looked to fly but he did manage to get it airborne a couple of times. The kite he was flying has a red circle around it.
While Chuck was learning how to fly a kite, I got a video of this 4 second hang glider flight.
I also noticed this cow flying from the tower of the Kitty Hawk Kite Company. :)
We stopped at Subway for lunch and then drove to Walmart in Kitty Hawk to get groceries for the next week. After we got back home, we enjoyed sitting by the lake for a little while and then grilled some shrimp for dinner. Yummy! :)
Chuck accidentally broke the squeegee he uses for cleaning the windshield when he was closing the slideout tray in the basement. After dinner, we rode back to Walmart to get another squeegee and saw these cute sprinkling cows watering the grass on the side of the road. :)
Let's see. We have seen a flying cow, dancing cows, a cow flying from the top of a tower, and cows that water the grass with their tails...but not a Chick-fil-a anywhere. :)
What a great day! The weather was perfect and the kite festival was so much fun! Tomorrow, we head further south to Cape Hatteras.
