On Friday, we stayed at Cape Disappointment until the 1 pm
check-out time because our next stop at a KOA in Hammond, Oregon, was only an
hour away. We enjoyed one more bike ride
around the park that morning before loading up the bikes and getting ready for
our long one hour journey further down the coast. :)
I kind of messed up when I booked our reservations for the
next couple of weeks after getting back from Nashville and didn't space our
camping locations very far part. We
usually like to travel from 2 1/2 to 4 hours when we are changing
locations. I was so focused on price and
how nice the campground was that I forgot to see how far we would be traveling between
the campgrounds when I made the reservations.
We traveled Hwy 101 for most of our one hour trip from Cape
Disappointment which included crossing the Columbia River over a two-lane
bridge that is about 4 miles long. It is
the longest continuous truss bridge in North America and was the last completed
segment of Hwy 101 (Wikipedia). As the bridge gets closer to the Oregon side
of the river, it rises to a very tall 196 feet (at high tide).
When you are riding in a motorhome and looking down at the Columbia
River below, it looks like you are about 500 feet above the river.
We drove through Astoria to Hammond, Oregon, where the KOA was
located. Check-in went very easy
particularly considering the size of this KOA (311 sites). KOAs are usually our last choice; but this weekend
all KOAs had a free night of camping on Friday, September 13th, if you stayed
for at least 2 nights. This particular
KOA had good reviews on RV Parks Review and was also listed on the Big Rigs
Best Bets Directory.
The other reason for choosing this KOA is we wanted full
hookups so I could get caught up on laundry and we wanted an open site where we
could get good satellite reception. Tennessee
was playing Oregon this weekend and we didn't want to miss seeing that. Plus there were some other good college
football games this weekend. We were
probably the only people in the campground wearing orange on Saturday.
Our site #O-6 was long but was a little low on the front but
there was adequate space between the sites (more than we usually get at a KOA).
We walked around the campground a few times over the
weekend. This KOA is probably one of the
nicest ones we have stayed in.
UT lost. :( But I got caught up on laundry. We're ready to move to Nehalem Bay which is a
whopping 39 miles away. Woohoo! We're really moving on down the Oregon
Coast now! :)
