Woodstock & Killington

After all of our hiking yesterday, we were ready to just do some touring by car today.  Our first stop of the day was King Arthur Flour Company in Norwich, Vermont.

This employee owned company was founded by Henry Wood in 1790 in Boston, Massachusetts.  The business began as an importer and distributor of English-milled flour.  Later, the company was sold and re-organized into Sands, Taylor & Wood Company after its owners at the time.  They introduced a new brand of premium flour and named if King Arthur Flour after George Wood had attended a performance of the musical King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.  The company continued through other owners and was converted to the employee-owned business it is today called The King Arthur Flour Co., Inc.

From inside the bakery, we could see all kinds of goodies being made from chocolate chip cookies...

...to different kinds of specialty breads.

After walking around the baking store and sampling some of their goodies, we had some pastries at the cafe including a coconut macaroon and chocolate-filled croissant.

Our next stop of the day was downtown Woodstock, Vermont.  We walked around the town and browsed around in some of the stores and art galleries.

Upon the recommendation of a lady in one of the art galleries, we left Woodstock and drove towards Killington stopping at the Lone Trail Brewery for lunch.  The brewery had outside seating on a deck by the stream and we enjoyed a delicious lupper.

As we left the brewery, we noticed this really cool vehicle.  Not sure if it was a car or a motorcycle??

Next, we drove up to Killington.

We first drove to the town of Killington which consisted of a couple of buildings, farmland, and a lot of beautiful leaves.  Unfortunately, the pictures just don't capture how pretty the leaves are particularly on a cloudy day.  :(

Next, we drove up the mountain to the Killington Ski Resort.  The ski runs are surrounded by beautiful fall foilage and will probably be covered with snow within a couple of months.

We considered riding The Gondola but it had already closed.

I imagine the view from the top on a sunny day would be spectacular this time of year but the trees surrounding the lifts and parking areas were pretty spectacular too.

After driving off the mountain, we spotted a side road with some pretty awesome scenery.

Some trees just seem to stand out from the others whether it be a bare white one...

...or a deep lush red one.

We all were ready for something sweet and so we stopped at The White Cottage Snack Bar for some ice cream.  After ordering our ice cream, we sat outside in their glider-swings by the river enjoying our ice cream.

Ken is so excited about seeing all these glorious leaves he can hardly contain himself! :)

After returning to the campground, we played another round of SkipBo, Pinochle and Sequence Dice with the women winning all three...again.  Oh yeah, I almost forgot to mention that the guys did win two other games of drawing for high card.  Now that takes a lot of skill!  :)
