We decided to try out one of Tucson's bike trails today. I went on to the Traillink.com website which I have used before to find a good bike trail. I found three trails to choose in Tucson and I decided on the Aviation Bikeway trail because it had a good review.
We drove to a parking lot identified on Traillink but we could not get to the bike trail from that parking lot. After going into a county office building next to the parking lot, we found out we had to drive around the block to get to a parking lot closer to the trail. We loaded the bikes back on the car and drove to the parking lot. We still had to ride our bikes across a dirt lot to get to the bike trail but then we were finally on our way.
The trail was old and bumpy, there were 4 or 5 road crossings, the bike bridge was probably the worst we had ever crossed, and the scenery was....well, let's say it was not the most scenic part of Tucson.
We rode by this species of cactus that was kind of weird-looking.
Prickly but pretty in its own way...
We rode five miles out and five miles back getting a 10 mile bike ride in. On the way back home, we rode out to Tucson Mountain Park to check out the Gilbert Ray Campground. While Gilbert Ray did not have full hookups, it would be a nice place to camp out in the desert.
Tucson Mountain Park is next to Saguaro National Park and the hills and mountains of both parks are covered with those curious saguaro cacti.
Later that afternoon, we went for another walk around the campground and sat outside to watch the sun go down in the Arizona skies.
