As we left Mackinaw Mill Creek Campground on Wednesday morning, we drove by the lakefront sites in the campground. These sites were full and you could see people sitting at the front of their sites at all times of the day enjoying the views of the lake.
We drove down Hwy 31 along the western side of the top of the "mitten" of Michigan that borders the eastern side of Lake Michigan.
The bike trails in Michigan are some of the best we have seen. There was a bike trail that went for miles and miles as we drove through Petoskey, Michigan. When we entered the town of Charlevoix, we noticed all the beautiful flowers planted along both sides of the road.
We crossed over the canal that connects Lake Charlevoix to Lake Michigan.
And we noticed something we haven't seen in a long time: a Rexall Drug Store. I have very fond memories of the Thursday night $1 special at the soda fountain of the Rexall Drug Store in Donelson where I grew up. One dollar would buy you a hamburger, french fries, and a big chocolate milk shake. :)
After about 88 miles and 2 hours of driving, we arrived at Honcho Rest Campground in Elk Rapids, Michigan. The campground is a nice little campground that is filled mostly with seasonal campers. Our site is a back-in site with full hook-ups.
After getting everything set up, we took a walk around the campground and walked out on to one of the docks that extend out over Bass Lake, the small lake behind the campground.
We sat outside for a little while that evening and I took a picture of the sun setting behind Bass Lake.
Tomorrow, we begin exploring the ring finger and pinky finger of Michigan's mitten. :)
did you take your picnic food in a picnic basket to the picnic lunch you had at the picnic table on Picnic Mountain, or did you just use a picnic bag? Looks like a great area--
