The Forgotten Coast

We left Atlanta on Sunday after going to church with Tafanie and Crystal and their families.  We drove to one of our favorite Passport America parks, Wanee Golf & RV Resort, which is about halfway between Atlanta and our ultimate destination until Friday:  Carrabelle, Florida.

It misted on us some on the way to Wanee, but later that evening, after we were all set up, the bottom fell out.  Chuck and I went over to Ken and Bonnie's to watch the Denver Broncos play the Green Bay Packers.  We played a couple of games while we were watching the football game with the men winning both SkipBo and Pinochle.  What's that about????

On Monday morning, we left Wanee around 8 am and were soon heading south through Georgia and its abundant cotton fields.  It almost looked like it had snowed on the fields!

We continued heading south around Thomasville, Georgia, and through Monticello, Florida.

We arrived at Carrabelle Beach RV Resort a little before noon and managed to avoid the rain all the way down.  While we were getting set up, Ernie and Noela arrived and began getting set up in their site.  We walked across the street to enjoy Carrabelle's beach for the afternoon.

While Ken, Bonnie, Chuck and I set up our chairs to relax on the beach...

...Ernie and Noela went for a swim in the Gulf.

While Ken, Ernie, and Chuck went for a walk to the east as far as they could go around the point. Bonnie, Noela and I enjoyed sitting on the beach reading our books.

After our nice afternoon at the beach, we grilled and ate together outside at Ken and Bonnie's site and then went inside to play a round of SkipBo.  The men won again!  What's going on???  I guess we had to let them win since they had driven yesterday and today!

On Tuesday, we loaded the bikes and all the beach gear into Ernie and Noela's truck and all rode together to St. George Island.  Chuck and I have only been there a couple of times but had not walked out on the beach.  The beach is supposed to be a great shelling beach.

As you can tell, it was an overcast day but it was still a warm, humid day.

While everyone else walked the beach some looking for shells and other treasures, Chuck and I enjoyed sitting and reading.

Chuck had gotten a nice big fat blister on his foot yesterday from walking barefooted on the beach for a couple of miles and then walking again early this morning with Ken and Ernie so he needed to give his foot a rest.

After enjoying the beach for a couple of hours, we were ready for some lunch and rode back into the center of town.  We decided to go to the restaurant we found that was still open:  The Blue Parrot.  Chuck and I ordered a dozen baked oysters that were very good and bigger than they had been last year.  Ernie and Noela tried them and liked them.

Ken tried one too but I'm not so sure he liked it as much as we do.

Bonnie, the non-seafood lover of the bunch, had no interest in trying them at all.  Of course, I'm not going to eat any of her beets either.  :)

The weather was pretty gloomy and it even started to sprinkle a little bit.  We drove into Apalachicola for a little bit but then headed back to the campground.  Ernie and Noela took another dip in the Gulf and then tried out the campground pool too and then we all got together over at Ken and Bonnie's later that evening and just enjoyed sitting outside and talking.

On Wednesday, we again all rode together in Ernie and Noela's truck up to Cape San Blas which is about 40 miles west of Carrabelle.  We stopped at the RV site that we have rented previously and that my mom and dad had stayed at many, many times.  No one was camping on the site so we were able to drive into the site, park and walk out to the beach.

When they saw the beauty, quietness, and solitude of the beach, I think they understood why we have always loved Port St. Joe and The Forgotten Coast.

We got back in the truck, drove out on Cape San Blas, and parked at Cape Palms Park.  We unloaded the bikes and rode down toward St. Joseph State Park first and then back out toward Hwy 30 where we had passed a restaurant called The Sand Bucket Smokehouse & Grill.

After riding about 11 miles, we stopped at The Sand Bucket and enjoyed a very good lunch including their delicious pulled pork barbecue and salads at very reasonable prices.  After lunch, we rode our bikes back to Cape Palms Park, and then took our beach chairs over to the beach.

Ernie and Noela just couldn't resist getting in that cooling water.

Ken and Ernie walked the beach, Bonnie looked for shells, and Chuck, Noela and I enjoyed reading and sitting at the beach.

It was a much warmer day today but a great day at the beach.  Around 4:30, we packed up our beach gear and headed back to the truck.

We stopped at a nearby ice cream shop on the Cape, but it was closed on Wednesday,  That was disappointing.  However, we found another ice cream shop in Apalachicola and were able to get some ice cream there right before they closed for the evening.  Since we had been out all day and we didn't get back to Carrabelle until after 6 pm, we called it a day.

On Thursday, Chuck and I went to Millender's Seafood and bought 4 pounds of shrimp for grilling and boiling.  When we returned to the campground, I boiled the 2 pounds of smaller shrimp and put them in the refrigerator to be cooling down and then we went to the beach.

We joined Ken and Bonnie and Ernie and Noela.  We all went for a walk to the eastern point at different times and just plain enjoyed relaxing at the beach.  Right before we left, I walked up the beach to the west a short distance to capture our final pictures of Carrabelle Beach.

When we got back to the camper, I peeled and deveined the shrimp that Ken and Bonnie were going to grill for all of us and by 5:45, we were all enjoying a VERY delicious dinner of boiled shrimp, grilled shrimp and all the fixins'.

Chuck noticed when we came back to the camper that the rear passenger window was shattered!  We don't know how it happened but fortunately, the glass seems to be staying in tact and will hopefully hold together until we can get it replaced when we are at Alliance Coach in another week.

Did I ever mention that RVing is not for the faint of heart???  Seems like there is always something going on.

But you know what?  We are SO BLESSED!  Even with the inconveniences of leaks, window breaks, slide-ins that need to be repaired, and water heater elements going out and scaring us to death because they smell like an electrical fire, I don't think we would change a thing.  We are so blessed to be able to do what we had dreamed of doing and seeing such beautiful things and sharing those experiences with such awesome friends and family!
